InnerSelf's Daily Inspiration

The Pathway to Integrated Living
— Daily reminders for a conscious, connected life —

Viktor Frankl survived a concentration camp by understanding that no one could take away his freedom of thought. The guards could do whatever they wanted to his body, but his inner self would always be free. He also discovered that having a goal — something to look forward to, a reason to survive — gave people power to live. Goals that are important to us give us power to live. But how many of us actually know what we want? A blind diabetic skier named Jean taught this lesson the hard way: he skied full speed down a slope and did two somersaults. That's when his escort realized she was the one who was handicapped — she'd never done anything daring, choosing instead a calm, safe life. She wondered if she'd ever really lived.

The focus for today is:
There's a kind of magic in writing down your goals; they take on a more powerful life when they're put on paper, somehow making your dreams more real.

Today's message is inspired by Randi B. Noyes, author of the book: The Art of Leading Yourself: Tap the Power of Your Emotional Intelligence
Randi shares the story of Jean Emere, a blind former Olympic downhill skier who knew he didn't have much time left. He was determined to win the cross-country competition. They trained at dawn every day. Jean placed second. He lived two more years. But Jean gave Randi something more valuable than a medal: the realization that she had to decide exactly what she wanted. As she writes: "Those of us who don't dare to live are the truly handicapped in this world." In 1953, three percent of Yale students had clearly defined goals. Twenty years later, those three percent had achieved more than the ninety-seven percent who hadn't been clear. Today's invitation is simple but demanding: write down what you actually want. Not what you should want. What you want. Be honest. Your subconscious can't receive clear instructions if you only "sort of" know.
